This gripping memoir needed to be told. I have read most of Yancy's books, and this memoir sheds light on his childhood background and explains why he writes what he does. His lifelong quest to find the truth and uncover the lies he was fed as a child in a fundamentalist home and church environment. His mother was widowed while the boys were still babies. Her dreams of going to the mission field were shattered, and she tried to live vicariously through the boys to see her dreams come true. Mildred Yancy was a Bible teacher holding fundamentalist religious beliefs. She applied Scripture literally and made vows to God on behalf of her children. Even though poverty plagued this single mother, she drove them to pursue what she believed to be their calling. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2021 )

- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Martham -- Honest heart-wrenching memoir, prelude to Yancey's books : I could hardly put this book down. I related to and remembered so many of the beliefs and speakers and restrictions of his childhood and even attended the same Bible college a few years after he did. I was raised by a fundamentalist pastor who was also a womanizer . Like Yancey and his brother, my siblings and I have taken very different paths in life. It must be why I was so drawn to Yancey's books when I first read "Disappointment with God." Finally, no more cover-up, no more dodging questions. This memoir summarizes the lifelong story of a fellow pilgrim whose curiosity and natural journalistic gifts equipped him to share his story in such a way that it compels me to continue my journey to live the life God has in store for me. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Challenging but hopeful : Yancey's memoir is an account of his upbringing in a spiritually abusive fundamentalist environment, and how that affected him, his older brother, and his mother (she being the primary spiritual abuser). I had never read any of Yancey's books, but was intrigued to find out how someone could emerge from such an background with faith intact. The spoiler is: he did not emerge with his faith. He first found his faith only after a profound experience of God's goodness, beauty, and grace in the midst of intense crisis. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2021 )

Wabshaw -- Finding God...even in church : My childhood has so many almost identical experiences to Philip's (substituting an alcoholic father for his fundamentalist mother), but in religious terms, we had the same journey through and out of fundamentalism. This is the book I have always wanted to write but because of the kind of childhood I had so many memories and emotions have been repressed to the point of being not much more than distant hints. For anyone who has ever thought that perhaps the church has hurt them, or they know the church has driven them away, please read this memoir. There is healing in the telling of your life as there has been for Philip. C. S. Lewis wrote a book called Surprised by Joy. Philip's could have been titled Amazed by Grace! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from RGD -- Now I get it : Since my college days I’ve read and reread Yancey’s works. They’ve answered a call in my soul that no other author has done in quite the same way. Hearing about his personal experience, I now get why I’ve related so strongly. I couldn’t put this latest work down, every sentence was another insight into the experience, the thinking, the person and God. So Phillip a big personal thank you.
